Portrait Session : The Insleys

After being rained out on Saturday afternoon, I was able to get together with our friends, the Insleys, on Sunday afternoon for the third of the five free portrait sessions that I offered a few weeks ago. We met up in Redondo Beach and had a wonderful time bouncing around a few spots on the beach.

Here are some of my favorite photographs from the session:

Portrait Session : Carrie

On Friday I held the first of the five free portrait sessions that I offered last week with my friend Carrie. We had a lot of fun bouncing between a few locations in downtown Long Beach and Carrie was great to photograph.

Here are some of my favorite photographs from the session:

A special ‘thank you’ goes out to my wife Miranda for all her assistance during the session.

100 Strangers

100 Strangers

Recently I came across a story on JPG Magazine’s website (that unfortunately, I am unable to locate) in which the author commented that a mentor instructed him to shoot women because that was what the author was the most afraid of. The mentor did this to challenge the author in order to help the author become a better photographer.

When I ask myself, “what I am afraid of”, shooting strangers is the first thing that comes to mind. I have been reluctant to take any shots in which a stranger is or is a major part of the composition because  I fear coming of as intrusive or “creepy” in the process.  This may be holding me back a bit and something I see as an opportunity to develop myself.

This brings me to 100 Strangers. I came across this group on Flickr and I thought that this would be a great way to get over my fear and to improve myself as a photographer.  The business cards that I discussed in my previous post were mostly made for this project.  I wanted the subjects of the portraits to be able to contact me so that they could see the shots and so that they could get a copy of the photographs.

I have yet to start this project, but my intention is to post a photograph of each “Stranger” on my blog as well as in the Flickr group.

Wish me luck!!
