Shots from the Huntington Beach Pier3

I left the house on this overcast morning to head down to the Huntington Beach Pier to play with my 70-300mm VR lens and to capture some shots of the local surfers.  I shot everything in RAW and I am not quite sure how I feel about the edits.

I have found it particularly hard to edit these shots as well as the ones that I took last week at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. Both days were overcast and in both cases, the shots were taken from above and focusing on subjects that were in or on darker water.

Here are a couple from today. Tell me what you think.

New Macro Shots with the D90

Last night I thought that it would be fun to take some shots with my 60mm Macro Lens on the new D90 body.  The flowers I bought my wife for Valentine’s Day seemed like a great subject for such an experiment.  I also wanted to play around with the in camera settings to produce JPG files over RAW files (for those not sure what I am talking about, check out my previous post on the subject).

Here is a gallery of the shots that I took and they are the JPG images that the camera processed by itself.  There has been no editing done to them at all.

Tell me what you think.

Photoshop: Essential Adjustment Layers

Photoshop: Essential Adjustment Layers

What I have learned about image editing in Photoshop CS3, I have learned from The Radiant Vista’s video tutorials. I seem to have learned the most from the Essential Adjustment Layers video that runs through how to add layers to make significant improvements to my images. There is also one on Image Sharpening that is quite useful as well. These two particular video tutorials can be found on page 6. I have not had a chance to go through the other tutorials yet. If I find anything good, I will pass it along. I should mention that it was mentioned to me that some of them on the first few pages may be audio only.

These two tutorials go step by step through a few images and show how the different Photoshop tools can be applied to make your photographs shine. I would post some “before and after” shots here but you can see more clearly for yourself once you start editing your own images. I have been told by some friends that they have been very helpful when making a first step into Photoshop like me (with no training at all).
