Lesson Learned : My MacBook Pro Experience

Moving into our new place (without an office) I finally had a good reason to sell my iMac and make the move to the MacBook Pro last week. After consulting friends and fellow Twitter users, I decided that going with a refurbished unit was a safe way to go. I was able to get the 2.53 GHz machine with 4GB of RAM for an astonishing $500 off of the list price and I was able to get it the next day. It is a considerable upgrade to the 20″ iMac that I was using before.

I was like a kid on Christmas Eve last Wednesday night because I knew that in less than 24 hours, my new computer would be delivered. Sure enough, at 10 Thursday morning, my coveted white box arrived with my present inside. I was over the moon excited to finally have it in my hands.

I spent the weekend getting to know my new system as well as I could and getting all my files and programs back in order when on Sunday night, I started seeing Tweets about the WWDC event that was happening today? The WWDC? I had never heard of this before. I jumped on Google and quickly brushed up on the subject.

The WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) is the showcase of the new software and hardware that Apple puts out each year. While new iPhones, iPhone software, and the new Snow Leopard Operating System were expected announcements, I cringed when I heard that new MacBook Pros were also available.

Once the Apple Store was back up and running I was able to see that the damage wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The model available for the price that I paid only had four (from what I could see) improvements over mine. The CPU is a touch faster, there is an SD card reader, the RAM can go up to 8GB, and the battery lasts about twice as long while the hard drive is 70GB smaller. I called Apple and they were more than willing to take mine back so I could get the newer one, but at a 10% restocking charge.

After some deliberation, I decided to forego the swap and keep the one that I have. The only upgrade that I would really like to have is the longer battery life but rarely am I in a situation away from an outlet for too long. I figure I’ll save myself the restocking fee and put it towards a new 3GS iPhone when they are released.

I know that with the pace the technology improves, things go obsolete very quickly, but I feel a little silly about not knowing of the WWDC, but now I know. Fool me once …
