Want Amazing Color ???

I was browsing the DPS Blog tonight when I came across a post that talks about using LAB color space instead of the more common RGB color space in Photoshop. It seemed like an interesting idea and the photos that were used as examples were quite impressive. So, I gave it a shot.

Here is an example of what I was able to do using this method:
foam1 Want Amazing Color ???

turned into ….

foam2 Want Amazing Color ???

The top image was the resulting JPG file that the camera produced using the settings that I have previously discussed.  The bottom image was the result of the simple steps that were outlined in the blog article on the RAW file that the camera collected.  The resulting images are worlds apart.  I am blown away by the result and how fast it was to attain.

I was planning on shooting in RAW and JPG FINE for a while but after seeing this, I may never go back to shooting JPG again.  We’ll see …

There’s an even easier way to achieve this. After you switch to Lab mode go to Apply Image under the Image menu, switch the blending mode to sfot light and then look at the Lab, a and b channels to see which of them looks best. It’s then a case of adjusting the opacity level to a point where the colour looks good but not fake and then you’re done.
