Pay Yourself for Each Shot

Sounds crazy, right?  Bear with me …

I have been spending a lot of time in a few Nikon groups over at Flickr (take a look at my profile and you can see all of the groups that I have joined so far). I have picked up a few things here and there, especially in one of the groups dedicated to the D80.

One thing that caught my attention was the notion that all shutters have a lifespan.  This was something that I had not previously considered.  With a little digging, I found out that the D80′s shutter is tested by Nikon up to 50,000 clicks.  What surprised me was that when I looked at the last few shots that I had taken, the last one was shot number 8,085!!  I have only had the camera for a five months!!

Something else that struck me in this discussion, was the suggestion that people put a penny in a jar for every shot that they take, so that they are prepared for their next camera purchase/upgrade.  While this would have only netted me $80.85 to date, I really like the idea.

I decided to up the ante, so to speak, for myself and “pay” myself a dime for every click that I make.  This should provide a nice little pot for an upgrade to a much nicer Nikon one of these days (and maybe a really fast Nikkor lens while I am at it).

I have already started a spreadsheet to track my usage and I have already put away a whopping $27.30 so far.  D3, here I come !!!
