My RAW vs. JPG struggle

My RAW vs. JPG struggle

Yeah, that is right. I have been slacking big time.  I have been shooting a little here and there but lately I have been messing around with some of the settings within the camera.  I was shooting straight RAW format but I have been a little intrigued by collecting the JPG files as well.

What I am trying to get a handle on is what processing I want the camera to do when it takes the RAW data and makes the JPG file. For those of you who are not certain (or who didn’t click on the link above), the RAW file is ALL the data from the image that the camera collects in its pure form so to speak. When the camera makes a JPG file, it takes this data and processes it according to the settings you have made within the camera.

The benefit to this is that your images look much better when they come off of the memory card and they require much less post-processing if any at all. What is great about the RAW files is that through software, you have 100% of the data to edit to make the image look how you want.

My camera allows me the option to collect both the RAW file for the shot as well as the JPG so that is what I have been doing. As far as the settings to make the JPG file are concerned, I have read a lot of what Ken Rockwell has to say about it and I think that the setting he uses/recommends over saturates the images so like I said, I have been playing around with them on my own.

If you are a Nikon user and have any input to what modes you use, I would love to hear it.
